About the Denturist Written and Practical Exams

After Education, there are two examinations for Licensure, a written exam and a practical/technical exam. The purpose of the two examinations is to assist the state licensing body in their responsibility to identify entry-level professionals whose knowledge and clinical skills meet or exceed basic expected professional standards.

WRITTEN EXAM

The Written Exam is a 4 hour Examination of two hundred forty (240) multiple-choice and true and false questions, covering 23 competency areas. The Examination content is determined by the following competency model, the International Federation of Denturists baseline competencies. The content and weighting of the competency model was based on input by professionals in the field who identified the most important knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for safe and effective practice by an entry-level denturist.

The 23 comptencies the Denturist Written Exam covers:

  • General Anatomy and Physiology 3%
  • Orofacial Anatomy 7%
  • General Histology 2%
  • Dental Histology and Embryology 2%
  • Periodontology 2%
  • Microbiology and Infection Control 6%
  • Pathophysiology (Medicine) 10%
  • Radiographic Pattern Recognition 1%
  • Biomechanics (Dental Kinesiology) 1%
  • Dental Psychology 1%
  • Gerontology 2%
  • Nutrition 2%
  • Pharmacology 2%
  • Pre-Clinical Prosthetics 10%
  • Prosthodontic Clinical Prosthetics/Theory and Application 20%
  • Removable Partial Dentures 8%

  • Community Oral Health for the Denturist 1%

As part of the Denturist Exam, Candidates will need to schedule with a Testing Center or use the Online Proctored Written Exam.

PRACTICAL EXAM

The practical examination includes patient treatment, alginate impressions, final impression, bite registration, and development and try-in of trial (wax) denture. The examination will be conducted as if the patient has no existing dentures, with licensed denturists Proctoring the examination. A total of ten hours is allotted for the timed practical examination. This time takes into account potential waiting periods for evaluations by proctors. Candidates should have no problems with time, but should calculate wait periods into their planning.

Patient Criteria:

  1. 1. Candidates are responsible for providing their own fully edentulous patients.
  2. 2. Candidates are encouraged to bring a patient that has:
  3.       a. A class-one jaw classification;
  4.       b. Been wearing an existing set of dentures for at least one year;
  5.       c. Have sufficient vertical dimension to easily set teeth.
  6. 3. Candidates may have one alternate patient in case their first patient is rejected; alternates must meet ALL patient qualifications.

The practical examination process will include the following:

  1. 1) Patient presents with treatment record, oral health certificate and mouth mirror, on a tray.
  2. 2) Take preliminary impressions prior to examination. Bring diagnostic casts (preliminary models) and custom trays to the examination.
  3.     Patient presents with diagnostic casts, final models, final impression, mouth mirror, and treatment record, on a tray.
  4. 3) Patient presents with Articulated Model. Wax model denture, mouth mirror, and treatment record on a tray. Post-dam model at this phase.
  5. 4) Asepsis) Observation of candidates conduct and procedures during examination
  6. 5) Draw and Defend
  7. 6) Wire bending partial

Universal Testing Services LLC is approved to offer the Denturist Written and Practical Exams for the States of Oregon, Maine, Montana, and Washington.
